Analytical tools to get a structured view of a local reality

As there is a wide variety of analytical tools, this section of the toolkit is permanent work in progress. Currently, what we offer are introductions to the following tools:

  • Michael Porter's Diamond, a very common and useful tool to analyze local and regional competitive advantages,
  • Five forces, another tool developed by Michael Porter which is very useful in determining competitive options and threats to individual branches of industries,
  • Benchmarking, where we currently can only offer a link to a broad EU-funded program on sectoral benchmarking but will in the future add specific material,
  • a variety of Mapping techniques,
  • Transaction cost analysis which is very useful in determining the efficiency of government efforts to create a favorable environment for business.

In addition: Download of the document "Regional resource inventory and assessment of potentials for local development" by Manfred Poppe (word-file, 152 kb, 19 pages).
