The participatory, action-oriented approach

This approach is based on a series of workshops with stakeholders from different parts of a given value chain. Using the Metaplan technique, a possible sequence is as follows:

  Workshop format Expected result
First Workshop Inviting stakeholder from different parts of a value chain to elaborate a first rough mapping, usually mixing technical features and organizations
  • Mapping of the value chain, based on the knowledge of insiders

  • Identification of other stakeholders to be involved

Second Workshop Inviting a wider group of stakeholders to
  • assess / verify or adjust the results of the first workshop

  • identify main bottlenecks in the value chain

  • Identification of main bottlenecks

  • Motivation of stakeholders to continue process

Third Workshop Inviting the same stakeholders to identify and specify activities to address one or two bottlenecks
  • Action plan

Fourth Workshop Invite the same stakeholders to assess the implementation of the action plan and define further action
  • Revised action plan

The first three workshops can be organized within two to three months. The fourth workshop will be organized some months later, as practical activities have unfolded.
