The role of energy efficiency

Due to still low water prices and waste disposal fees, improving energy efficiency is often a valuable near-term first step to sustainability. It can deliver increased productivity, a reduction in pollution, lower consumption of natural resources, and improved financial performance - all this without affecting the benefits that are derived from energy use. Simple, low-cost energy efficiency measures include turning off equipment and lights that are not in use, switching to compact fluorescent bulbs, and using more fuel-efficient vehicles. Energy efficiency makes sense both environmentally and economically. By applying this concept, local authorities may reduce their operational costs and set an example for the private sector. For the private sector, energy efficiency can increase profitability and competitiveness by lowering the cost of doing business while at the same time reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

A first step to increase energy efficiency can be done through the application of the PREMA-Good Housekeeping Guides developed by GTZ-P3U which besides energy is also dealing with water, waste, resource use, storage and handling of materials and products issues.
